Pattern Description
Laughing Moon Mercantile #141 - Ladies' Flat Front Trouser with Medium Wide Legs
This pattern is for a classic fit trouser that has the top of the trouser at the natural waist.
The 1 3/4" waistband is attached above that. The vintage classic construction has
a button placket at the left side and an inseam pocket on the right side. These can be
exchanged for a left handed person. The opening can be changed to an side seam zipper
or a back opening. The fit has some wearing ease and is not tight to the body. There
are instructions for lining the trousers, both flat lining and a full lining that is attached only
at the waist. Instructions for choosing the best size and a basic fitting guide are included.
These trousers can be cut shorter to make shorts, Bermuda shorts, or capris
Fabric: Any medium to light bottom weight fabric, such as wool, linen, cotton, or poly
blend. Lining: Light weight twill, poly lining fabric. Interfacing: Medium Weight. A
substitution for interfacing in the waistband is Ban Roll, 1 1/2" wide and the length of
the waist plus 3 inches. Notions: 4 5/8" buttons or one 7" zipper and one pant/skirt
hook and eye.
Considerations for World War II Women's Uniforms
Several extant pairs of women's uniform trousers were used as a basis for this pattern.
However, it is not an exact copy of any of them. If you wish to use this pattern as a basis
for an impression of a WWII uniform you should get the permission from the person who
is in charge of uniforms for your unit. The following should be reviewed for uniformity in
your presentation. However, remember a few things. Not all uniforms were made at the
same factory. Some small deviations were normal and to be expected. Also, when a
uniform wore out replacements not only might have been different in manufacture, but
an exact color match might not be available. Also, if the serviceperson was out of country
they might have had a part of their uniform made in the country where they were and a
exact match might not be possible. And natural grading to different sizes would make
some measurements different. For example, the bottom of the legs would have been
graded, meaning the larger sizes would have wider bottoms as a usual practice.
